Being hypersensitive about potential racism is a great way to tell everyone how un-racist you are. In general, we're not sure what racism is, but we think that if we mention anything about race it's probably bad.
The term Jap only has a negative connotation because of the tone of its usage in WW2. By itself, it's a truncation of "Japanese", and you can't really say that calling someone Japanese is an insult is racist unless you're... REALLY RACIST!
